Dedicated to Life Orientation and Meaning-Making: Providing Pastoral, Spiritual, and Religious Care

We are delighted to welcome you to our Chaplaincy service, a place of support and compassion during challenging times. Our mission is to provide holistic care that nurtures the emotional, spiritual, and social well-being of every individual who comes through our doors.

Pastoral Care: Our pastoral care team is dedicated to offering emotional support. We are here to listen, reflect on your feelings and thoughts, and provide a comforting presence when you need it most.

Spiritual Care: We understand the profound questions that can arise during times of illness or difficulty. Our spiritual care focuses on exploring your worldview, morals, and values, helping you navigate “existential” questions such as "Why me?" and "Who am I now?"

Religious Care: For those who seek to express their faith or belief, our chaplaincy offers support through various rites and rituals that aligns with your belief, including prayer, worship, Holy Communion, sacraments, (secular) mindfulness, and meditation.

Holistic care: Our holistic approach assesses and addresses the bio-psycho-socio-spiritual dimensions of an individual's well-being. When someone is admitted to the hospital, the primary focus is on their biological or physical needs, such as treating an illness or healing a broken leg to restore physical health.

However, patients may also face psychological challenges. Past traumas can impact their current situation, requiring psychological support to help them work through these issues and achieve a better future.

The social domain examines whether a person has a supportive social network, including family and friends, to rely on during difficult times. It's essential to consider if a patient has a social support system in place.

Additionally, individuals may struggle with existential questions, particularly when facing physical limitations, financial burdens, or relationship breakups. These questions, such as "Why me?" or "Who am I now?" often arise during challenging periods and can affect a person's values and sense of purpose. Some may seek solace in a higher power or God, while others wrestle with existential questions as they try to make sense of their experiences. This is the spiritual layer.

Each layer of the bio-psycho-social-spiritual model is crucial to a person's overall well-being and requires careful attention to ensure comprehensive care. To learn more about how we provide support, please watch the video our chaplaincy team spearheaded: Watch Here

Emergency Visits

If you need a Chaplain to visit a patient urgently, any time of day or night, please ask a member of the nursing staff to contact the on-call Chaplain. Be sure to specify the patient’s faith or belief system so we can provide like-minded care to the best of our ability. Some beliefs require specific rites and rituals that only a designated person can conduct, for example, a Roman Catholic Priest. Specifying these needs helps us ensure the best care for the patient.

Urgent Referrals

Chaplaincy provides a 24/7 on-call service. To ensure the best care, please specify the patient's faith or belief system when contacting us. This will help Switchboard connect you with the appropriate duty Chaplain or, if required, the on-call Roman Catholic Priest. Call Switchboard at: 0114 243 4343.

Non-Urgent Referrals

For non-urgent referrals, please email sth.chaplaincy@nhs.net or leave a message at 0114 27 14999. We will aim to respond to you by the end of the next working day.

At our Trust, we aspire to be a beacon of excellence in chaplaincy care. We are committed to continuous research, innovation, and development within our service. Our goal is to set a standard that others in the field of chaplaincy can follow.

One of our key initiatives is running the first Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) pilots at our Trust. These pilots are designed to enhance the professional standards of our chaplains and have a significant impact on the quality of care we provide. Moreover, through these initiatives, we aim to influence and improve national chaplaincy practices.

In addition to our professional chaplains, we welcome volunteers from all belief systems, including non-religious beliefs. Our volunteers play a crucial role in supporting patients, visitors, and staff as they navigate the existential and spiritual challenges they may encounter during their time in the hospital.

By fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, we ensure that everyone receives the compassionate care and support they need, regardless of their faith or belief system.
