The Sheffield Vascular Institute (SVI) is a specialist collaborative unit providing diagnosis and treatment of disorders involving blood vessels. Surgeons and Interventional Radiologists work hand in hand to ensure that patients receive the best possible care. Sometimes this involves traditional open surgical techniques and sometimes endovascular or “keyhole” techniques.
The SVI has a national reputation and is one of the biggest Vascular Units in the UK with a team of 8 Vascular Surgeons and 6 Vascular Interventional Radiologists and 3 specialist Vascular Nurses. We are supported by a team of Consultant Vascular Anaesthetists, Radiographers and Nurses.
The Sheffield Vascular Institute is located in the Firth Wing, at the Northern General Hospital and provides comprehensive services to the adult populations of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham, a population of 1.5 million people. The SVI also provides services to the population of N Derbyshire, and complex highly specialist services to the populations of Doncaster and Bassetlaw and receives referrals from across the UK.
A consultant vascular Surgeon and consultant vascular Radiologist is available on-call every day, 24 hours a day for trauma, bleeding and vascular emergencies. The SVI serves the new major trauma centre for South Yorkshire based at the Northern General Hospital.

The Vascular Studies Unit within the Department of Medical Physics provides non-invasive diagnostic screening and a follow up investigative service for vascular disease. The work involves colour duplex ultrasound plus Doppler pressures and exercise studies. We provide a cost-effective service, which enhances patient experience and management. This includes the non-invasive investigation of DVT, stroke and the surveillance of by-pass grafts and stents.

The Sheffield Vascular Institute is one of the largest single vascular units in the UK, with an extensive workload in all areas of vascular surgery and radiology. It has a multi-disciplinary team approach which includes many other specialities, particularly neurology, cardiothoracic surgery and diabetology. The Institute accepts a wide range of tertiary referrals particularly for specialist vascular procedures and interventional radiology.
There is an extensive programme of vascular research in Sheffield, carried out through close collaboration between the University and Trust. This includes a variety of projects including clinical trials and health service research relating to vascular disease, many of which are carried out in collaboration with the School of Health and Related Research. Professor Beard also has an active programme of research into the educational methodology of workplace-based assessment, distance learning and simulation.
The following are examples of recent and current research projects:
Multicentre randomised clinical trial funded by the Health Technology Assessment Programme related to varicose veins and leg ulcers.
Projects relating to the organisation of services, access and equity. These include trials using methods of evaluating patient preferences, including discrete choice experiments and willingness-to-pay techniques and have been funded by HTA and SDO grants.
Systematic literature reviews, several of which have been published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.
Projects relating to decision and economic modelling of new technological developments, including the imaging of Carotid disease and Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair. These have attracted funding from the HTA and Wellcome.
Technology appraisals and reviews of new interventional procedures funded by NICE.
Reliability, validity and acceptability of Procedure-Based Assessment of the technical skills of surgeons in the operating theatre funded by the Health Technology Assessment Programme.
