Kidney Transplant Team

Who are we?

We are a group of staff who:

  • Assess patients that are thinking about having a kidney transplant
  • Check that patients are well enough to have a kidney transplant
  • Assess people thinking about donating one of their kidneys
  • Carry out kidney transplant surgery
  • Follow up care after a kidney transplant or a kidney donation

We offer the following types of kidney transplant:

  • Deceased donor
  • Living donor
  • related
  • unrelated
  • Blood group incompatible
  • Altruistic (donating a kidney to someone you don’t know)
  • Paired exchanges (where a donor and recipient are mismatched with each other. It may be possible for them to be matched with another donor and recipient pair in the same situation and for the kidneys to be exchanged or swapped).

The majority of kidneys from our living donors are removed using key-hole surgery.

Our patients meet us when:

  • They want to find out more about having a kidney transplant
  • They have been referred by their renal Consultant

We also see friends and family who are interested in donating one of their kidneys

We can help you:

  • Decide if a kidney transplant is the right treatment for you
  • Support you through the assessment process both for patients and living donors
  • Support you through the kidney transplant
  • Give follow up care after your surgery
  • Having a kidney transplant: is it right for me?
  • Living kidney donation: information for patients and their families
  • Living kidney donation: your questions answered
