Haemodialysis

We are a group of staff that care for patients with kidney failure that need haemodialysis treatment (about 550 patients).

We have 2 main dialysis units at the Northern General Hospital and 4 satellite units across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire.

Our patients meet us when their remaining kidney function can no longer keep them healthy and well and they need treatment for their kidney failure. Most patients will have chosen haemodialysis as their choice of treatment for kidney failure, and will have been helped to make that choice by the Renal Pre-Treatment Team.

Most patients come to us from either:

• The low-clearance clinic (Sorby Renal Outpatients)
• During an admission to the renal inpatient wards

We have a haemodialysis coordinator who will arrange your dialysis sessions and let you know:

• Where they will be
• When they will take place: this will be morning, afternoon or evening

We do try to arrange your dialysis sessions at a time and place that is best for you but this is not always possible, especially when you first start haemodialysis treatment.

It may be difficult to arrange your dialysis to suit you because of things over which we have no control, such as transport, unit opening times or the medical needs of other patients.
