Palliative Care

Palliative care is an approach which improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing life-threatening illness, through the prevention, assessment and treatment of pain and other physical, psychosocial and spiritual problems.

Patients are referred to the team with a variety of needs, these include:

  • Symptoms that are difficult to control for instance psychological concerns, anxiety and depression
  • Social concerns with regarding their  family or carer’s needs
  • Spiritual concerns - in which patients require help in adjusting to diagnosis or prognosis

Our team provides a variety of services across the Trust including:

  • 18 specialist palliative care beds at the Sheffield Macmillan Unit for Palliative Care on the Northern General Hospital site
  • Hospital support teams
  • An 24/7 on call palliative care service throughout the Trust
  • A palliative care outpatient service

Each year we expect to have seen 800 new patients and 1900 follow up patients in outpatient clinics. We will also have cared for 220 patients as inpatients.
