The Orthopaedic Department at the Northern General Hospital provides an Orthopaedic elective and trauma service for the population of Sheffield and surrounding districts. National referrals are also received for complex revision surgery and limb lengthening. As a teaching unit, the Department has an academic team to carry out research, development and training.
Orthopaedics has a dedicated outpatient facility and fracture clinic, the latter providing a 7-day a week service. A dedicated X-ray facility supports these services. There are mixed elective and trauma wards and a long-stay rehabilitation ward shared with the Care of the Elderly.
The majority of day case patients attend the hospital Day Surgery Unit, but some patients may be admitted as a day case to inpatient beds. There are trauma operating lists throughout the day and evening, 7 days a week. An emergency night service is provided and shared by all Northern General specialties.
