The Sheffield Hand Centre (SHC) is a purpose designed unit dedicated to providing excellent health care for patients with hand problems. We combine orthopaedic and plastic surgical expertise, bringing together the necessary skills to manage all aspects of hand disorders and injuries.
We provide care for all aspects of hand surgery from the initial consultation to completed rehabilitation and return to noraml daily activities. Care is delivered at the Northern General Hospital (NGH), mostly in the Sheffield Hand Centre.
The Sheffield Hand Centre is a fully integrated orthopaedic and plastic surgery hand unit, of which there are only 5 or so such units in the UK. The department provides a world-class, predominantly day-case facility for: trauma, elective & rehabilitation hand services for the population of Sheffield and the surrounding area.
Although hand surgery is an emerging specialty there is great demand for the services it provides. For instance 20% of patients attending emergency departments have a hand injury. Mostly affecting the young working population, hand trauma is a major source of disability with high economic impact.
The hand surgeons in Sheffield provide trauma lists 6 days per week This results in high levels of safety and improved clinical outcomes compared to previous systems. In recognition of the exceptional trauma service the hand surgeons in Sheffield provide, we were one of the first UK units to be accredited as a Major Trauma Centre by the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand in 2009.
