These are simple and non-invasive tests used to assess symptoms like diarrhoea, bloating and wind. We provide 3 HMBTs: glucose, fructose and lactose. Your consultant will decide which HMBTs are suitable for you depending on the nature of your symptoms. Each test takes 2-3 hours to perform, with separate visits required for each test. You can go straight back home afterwards.

This is a simple and non-invasive breath test used to diagnose Helicobacter Pylori, an infection in your stomach which can cause ulcers. The test takes around 30 minutes and you can go straight home afterwards.
These tests are used to assess swallowing difficulties and/or reflux symptom. We provide 2 OTFs:
1. Oesophageal manometry
2. 24-hour pH/Impedance studies
The test(s) you have done will depend on the nature of your symptoms. It will take approximately 45-60 minutes to do your test(s). Patient usually have local anaesthetic, but we are unable to sedate due to test requirements. You can drive to and from your appointment and return to work afterwards (employer permitting). If you undergo both tests you will be required to return at the same time the next day for approximately 10 minutes.

This test is usually used to assess patients with reflux. We arrange this for you, but it is performed in the Endoscopy department. Patients can have either local anaesthetic or sedation, and it takes around 20-30 minutes to do. After your procedure a staff member from GI Physiology will attend the endoscopy recovery suite to switch on your device and provide test instructions.

These tests are used to assess patients with faecal incontinence or constipation. We provide 3 anorectal physiology tests
Which test(s) you have will depends on the nature of your symptoms. It will then take approximately 45-60 minutes to do your test(s), which are generally performed without the use of anaesthetic or sedation. You can drive to and from your appointment and return to work afterwards if you wish.

This scan is used to obtain images of the rectum to assess and stage rectal tumours. It takes approximately 30 minutes to do and doesn’t usually require the use of anaesthetic or sedation. Normally patients can go straight home afterwards.

This is a non-invasive treatment option for those with a range of bowel related symptoms. It aims to provide you with a range of advice and skills to help manage your symptoms. The sessions can be provided face to face, or over the phone, and usually lasts 30-60 minutes. Patients typically have one session every 6 weeks for approximately 3-6 months.
Sacral Neurostimulation is a long-term therapy option for those with chronic faecal incontinence. It involves implanting a small wire into your lower spine, which delivers low level electrical impulses to a nerve which controls the back passage muscle.

This is a minimally invasive treatment option for those with faecal incontinence. It involves placing a small needle in the ankle, which delivers mild electrical impulses to the nerve which controls the back passage muscle. It is done once every week for 12 weeks, with each session lasting 30 minutes.

This test is used to assess the function of the small bowel in those with unexplained symptoms like nausea and vomiting. The procedure can take 5-7 hours to complete. Patients usually have local anaesthetic, but sedation is not permitted. Patients can normally go straight home afterwards.
