Our well established and progressive service now offers one of the most comprehensive and specialised services in the UK. Comprising of nine luminal Gastroenterologists working from two sites in the city, we offer a high quality, patient centred service. The Gastroenterology Units at both hospitals are run by Consultants with considerable expertise and experience in a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions.
Their approach combines rigorous clinical skills with a clear understanding of the benefits and pitfalls of gastrointestinal investigation. All standard gastrointestinal investigations are available within the hospital, and in addition, many new techniques have and treatments have been pioneered and established in the department. The Consultant staff are supported by experienced Specialist Nurses in Gastroenterology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease, adding an important extra dimension to the support for the individuals attending the service.
A major part of the Department’s work is the provision of endoscopic services, including upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy and therapeutic procedures such as treatment of bleeding sources and oesophageal dilatation. We also provide a service for endoscopic ultrasound and hepatobiliary endoscopic ultrasound.
Specialised services and clinics are provided for patients with inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease and small bowel disease, small bowel endoscopy (capsule endoscopy and double balloon enteroscopy) and for those requiring parenteral nutrition.
