Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)

Oral and maxillofacial surgery combines a full surgical training with dental expertise.  The scope of practice is extensive and includes the diagnosis and treatment of:

  • Facial injuries
  • Head and neck cancers, inc oral & facial skin cancers
  • Salivary gland diseases
  • Facial disproportion
  • Facial pain
  • Facial surgical dermatology
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders
  • Impacted teeth
  • Neurovascular techniques
  • Cysts and tumours of the jaws
  • Vascular conditions
  • Facial reanimation surgery
  • Craniofacial and skull base surgery
  • Paediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery 
  • Trigeminal nerve injuries

The specialty is unique with the majority requiring a dual qualification in medicine and dentistry.  Oral and maxillofacial surgeons frequently work alongside other specialists including orthodontists, oncologists, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons and ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons.

In addition to the consultants, the department employs a variety of junior medical, dental, nursing, technical, and admin staff to assist in delivering a comprehensive facial service to its patients.

OMFS in-patient services are provided at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital on I1 ward with further paediatric services at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. 

Out Patients

Regular general and specialist clinics are held at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, Barnsley District General Hospital, Montagu Hospital and Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
