Consultant in Thoracic Surgery & Major Trauma in Sheffield, covering 1.8m in South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire. I am an enthusiast for Single Port VATS in all forms of thoracic surgery & as my routine approach for anatomical lung resection. Clinical interests include all forms of surgery for lung cancer, the mediastinum and diaphragm, thoracic trauma, chest wall tumours and pectus deformities (Nuss, Ravitch, Elastic Stable Repair), endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy. We established Sheffield as Europe's first Chest Wall Injury Society "Collaborative Center" in 2022. I run a dedicated Chest Wall Clinic, receiving regional and national referrals for thoracic trauma, complex chest wall reconstruction, and miscellaneous costal margin conditions and injuries including costal margin rupture and Slipping Rib Syndrome.
Research interests
With my Sheffield colleagues, we led the UK introduction of plate/screw fixation of rib fractures. I was supported by the Sheffield Clinical Research Academy in collaborations with UK and international colleagues to refine indications for & techniques of surgical fixation within the Sheffield Multiple Rib Fractures Study. I am in demand as faculty for thoracic trauma educational courses & product development consultation worldwide. I have particular interests in the taxonomy of blunt chest wall injury, leading the Chest Wall Injury Society taxonomy project, including rib fractures and costal margin injuries. Funded research interests, supported by Yorkshire Cancer Research and multiple grants, include quality of life in patients with early stage lung cancer, chest wall pain, empyema and single port VATS resections. I have published many articles related to mesothelioma, lung cancer, trauma and thoracic surgery in general. I am a regular speaker at conferences worldwide. I am past chair of the British Thoracic Oncology Group Charity Board of Trustees. Current & recent Committee memberships include IASLC Staging & Prognostic Factors Committee, EORTC, Chest Wall Injury Society, British Thoracic Society, Mesothelioma UK & NCRI Lung CSG and Mesothelioma Sub-Group.

His clinical work with adult patients who have coeliac disease has resulted in him being awarded the Coeliac UK Healthcare Professional of the Year Award (2010), the inaugural Complete Nutrition Coeliac Health Care Professional Award (2013), Clinical Nutrition Professional of the Year (2017) and Outstanding Achievement Award (2024).
His endoscopic work is in the field of small bowel endoscopy. Sheffield are the largest small bowel endoscopy centre in Europe. Prof Sanders was awarded the British Society of Gastroenterology Hopkins Prize for Endoscopy in 2019.
Research interests
Professor David S Sanders is a Professor of Gastroenterology and a Consultant Gastroenterologist. He leads the Academic Unit of Gastroenterology at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital & the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. He has published >500 peer reviewed papers (H-score > 100).
