Our services

The Sheffield Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic is a collaborative service provided by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust and the Congenital Heart Centre at Leeds General Infirmary. The ACHD clinic runs once or twice per month at the Chesterman Unit, Northern General Hospital. There are two Consultant Cardiologists, a visiting specialist ACHD nurse and an echocardiographer trained in congenital heart disease in attendance. There is a lunchtime multidisciplinary meeting involving the Cardiac Radiologists. The collaborative clinic has been running since 2005. Currently, there are over 1000 patients under active review.

The aorta is the major artery that leaves the heart and carries blood around the body. We have a specialised service for patients with conditions affecting the aorta in the chest.

The service consists of a dedicated clinic run by a team of specialist consultants who are involved in any operations or other types of procedures upon the thoracic aorta. This includes pioneering work to develop new techniques.

Located in the purpose built South Yorkshire Cardiothoracic Centre, the Cardiac Surgery service offers a full range of routine and specialist cardiac surgery procedures. Waiting times are short and we offer fast access to treatment.We see and care for patients with Coronary Heart Disease, Valvular disease, aortic disease.We also provide Coronary artery bypass surgery (including minimally invasive surgery). The team specialise in mitral valve surgery (including mitral valve repair), redo surgery and aortic surgery.

Working with the Multi Disciplinary Team we aim to address the needs of patients and their families before, during and after heart surgery; offering psychological support, information and education.Information sessions are available at the Northern General Hospital before and after surgery. These are run in a group format however, individual appointments can be accommodated. We are available for advice, queries and concerns about any aspect of cardiac surgery and can be contacted on the numbers below. As a Regional service, there are strong links to Primary Care Teams within Sheffield and the surrounding areas ensuring that ongoing Cardiac Rehabilitation needs are met.

The Cardiac Rhythm Management Service cares for patients with or suspected of having a variety of cardiac arrythmias. We provide the full range of services including diagnostic testing, outpatient services, cardioversion, pacemaker and defibrillator implantation including resynchronisation therapy, and radiofrequency and cryoablation. We have a specialist syncope clinic (for patients experiencing faints/blackouts), and a dedicated atrial fibrillation clinic. Patients are supported by our Arrythmia Care Coordinator who can give specialist advice. The CRM service is provided by 4 Consultant Cardiologists, 4 specialist nurses and a team of cardiac technicians.

Cardiac Arrhythmia: The team helps patients with heart rhythm problems. The patients we see are troubled by palpitations caused by fast or irregular heartbeats. We also see patients with slow heart rhythms who need implantable devices such as pacemakers, and patients at high risk of life threatening heart rhythms, who need implantable cardiac defibrillators.

Syncope (blackouts) and Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS) Service: The syncope and Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS) service is part of the Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) service. Working within the service are consultant cardiologists and nurse specialists. Patients are referred into the syncope or PoTS clinics when their doctor or health care professional feels that you have had a blackout or thought to have Postural Tachycardia Syndrome. 

Information for patients: We run several consultant and nurse specialist clinics during working hours at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. All patients who are referred to the Syncope and PoTS service will see a nurse specialist on their first appointment. The nurse specialists who work in the service have a lot of experience in looking after with patients who blackout or who have PoTS. Patients will not see a doctor on the first visit. After the clinic, patients are discussed with the Consultant. If at any time the nurse specialist feels that a patient needs to see a doctor then this will be arranged.

The Non-invasive Cardiology Department is managed by a team of highly skilled technicians and provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic services including Electrocardiography (ECG), Exercise Testing, Echocardiography, Tilt table testing, and 24 hour ECG monitoring. We investigate patients for possible cardiac conditions and monitor patients with ongoing cardiac conditions

We also host pacemaker and defibrillator follow up clinics at the Northern General Hospital.
 
We perform high quality diagnostic tests on outpatient and inpatient referrals using cutting edge technology and work closely with the Heart Failure Service, Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic and Cardiac Rhythm Management Service.

The Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Heart Failure Service aims to provide gold standard investigation and treatment for patients suffering from heart failure. The service comprises 3 Consultant Cardiologists with a special interest in heart failure working in close collaboration with colleagues in the Diabetes Service, a team of 5 specialist heart failure nurses and a Service Coordinator. We also run nurse specialist heart failure clinics, daily ward rounds at the Northern General Hospital to identify patients admitted with heart failure. We have two specialist wards for the management of heart failure and we run a weekly MDT meeting to plan patients ongoing care.

The Inherited Cardiac Conditions Service investigates, treats and supports patients and families with a wide range of inherited cardiac conditions. Patients will meet with one of our nurse specialists who can provide counselling and life long support to patients that are affected by an inherited condition. The service collaborates closely with the cardiac rhythm management service, the specialist aortic clinic and cardiothoracic surgeons. Our team has a national reputation for the quality and depth of service that it provides. We see and care for patients with a number of conditions - These include:

• Inherited arrhythmia sydromes (including Sudden Adult Death syndrome)
• Cardiomyopathies, including cardiac manifestations of muscular dystrophies
• Inherited arteriopathies, including Marfan’s syndrome
• Those with a family history of congenital heart disease, where this is known to be inherited.

The Sheffield Cardiothoracic Unit provides a full range of diagnostic and treatment services for all aspects and presentations of coronary heart disease. We have a Rapid Access outpatient service for GP referrals for stable patients with recent onset of chest pain. There is a 24/7 service for emergencies, including a Primary Angioplasty service for ST elevation heart attack patients, serving Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and Bassetlaw. We have the full range of diagnostic facilities for coronary heart disease including treadmill exercise testing, (stress) echocardiography, myocardial perfusion scintigraphy and angiography. We also have ready access to multi-slice CT angiography and magnetic resonance angiography.

We have a suite of 5 state of the art Catheter Labs with facilities for balloon angioplasty, stent implantation, pressure wire assessment, intravascular ultrasound, distal protection and rotablation. We also have five dedicated Cardiothoracic Operating Theatres, a 12 bedded Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and an 8 bedded Cardiac Surgery High Dependency Unit. We provide these services for the city of Sheffield, South Yorkshire/North Trent including North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire.

We offer a full range of cancer and non-cancer thoracic surgery procedures from high quality purpose built clinical facilities. A large proportion of surgery is undertaken via video assisted surgery (VATS) key hole surgery procedures. We see for patients with Malignant and non-malignant chest disease including lung cancer, mesothelioma, emphysema, empyema and chest wall deformity.

There is a close working relationship with the respiratory medicine team and there are twice weekly lung cancer MDT meetings to discuss patient care in Sheffield, and weekly lung cancer MDT meetings at our partner District General Hospitals with one of our Thoracic surgeons present.
