Cancer Research Centre

The cancer research centre is part of Weston Park and was opened in October 1999 to provide state-of-the-art, comfortable facilities for patients taking part in research studies.

The centre was generously supported by the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and the University of Sheffield.

Research is essential for helping to develop the way we care for and manage patients with cancer. The contribution of patients is really appreciated as it is these volunteers who help us to provide the best cancer care possible.

Your first visit

You should have received an appointment letter giving the time and date of your first appointment. When you arrive at the centre our reception staff will need to take your name and patient number. If your details have changed in any way please let them know at this point.

The receptionist will tell you where to go. The patient waiting area is on the 2nd floor. The bone scanner is also on the 2nd floor. The chemotherapy suite is on the 3rd floor. Lifts go to all floors and a wheelchair is available if you need one.

If you are having chemotherapy treatment then you may have to wait quite a long time. This is because of the complicated process involving blood tests and pharmacy checks. You should expect to be in the Centre for most of the day.

Who is involved in your care?

A Research Sister will be responsible for your care whilst you are taking part in a clinical trial.

The Consultant Medical Staff work both within the Main Hospital and the Research Centre. Their research contributes to national and international cancer research.

On the 3rd floor there is the Westfield Treatment Suite. Our chemotherapy sisters will oversee your care whilst you are having your treatment. We also have a team of administration staff who co-ordinate all the background work for the clinical trials. Please ask any member of staff if you need help or information and they will do their very best to assist you.

High quality clinical research is essential to improve the management of cancer. By being involved in a clinical trial you are helping to contribute to that research. The Cancer Research Centre at Weston Park Hospital provides special facilities to help develop clinical trials in cancer. The Cancer Charity has continued to fund many projects including drug development and improved radiotherapy treatments.
