Hepatology
The Liver Unit in Sheffield provides a comprehensive range of endoscopic, diagnostic and therapeutic services to the population of Sheffield. It also offers tertiary services to all hospitals in the South Yorkshire region in regard to liver disease, portal hypertension, therapeutic endoscopy including endoscopic ultrasound and ERCP.
The Academic Directorate of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has close links with the University of Sheffield, the team are research active and have won many national awards for innovation.
The Sheffield Liver Unit is one of eight designated non-transplant Regional Liver Centres in England and Wales. The Directorate are working in partnership with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust running a pre- and post-transplant clinic in Sheffield. The hepatologists work closely with the Department of Infectious Diseases to provide a comprehensive Viral Hepatitis Service for Sheffield and beyond. There are currently 8 Hepatologists working in Sheffield with a varied range of clinical and academic interests.
Acute admissions are managed through the 2 acute Gastroenterology and Hepatology wards at NGH. The Regional Hepatobiliary Surgery Unit (a designated Hepatobiliary Cancer Centre) is also at the NGH site.
- 4 Specialist Hepatology Nurses with administrative support
- A comprehensive radiological service including percutaneous biliary intervention and state of art cross-sectional imaging. Weekly hepatology X-ray meetings as well as benign HPB -Xray meetings
- State of the art Critical Care Facilities (mainly based at NGH).
- Regional Hepato-biliary pancreatic Surgery. Since November 2010, the HPB inpatient surgical service has been based at the Northern General Hospital site.
- There are well established vascular radiology services including trans-jugular liver biopsy, vascular embolization, TACE and a regional TIPSS service for South Yorkshire
- Regional Hepatobiliary Cancer MDT with core input from Hepatology. Full range of treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma are available including liver resection, radio-frequency ablation, TACE and chemotherapy.
- Dedicated liver histopathologists; weekly MDT with hepatologists.
- Weekly regional Virology MDTs
- Excellent Links to the Liver Transplant Units at Leeds and Birmingham.
- A Fibroscan service, currently based at NGH.
- Clinical Hepatology Research: the department is research active participating in a large number of portfolio studies in Hepatology and there are links to the CLRN. There has been a succession of research fellows in Hepatology who were awarded their MD.
- Regional and national cross departmental clinics for complex rare disease including cystic fibrosis, inherited immunological deficiency and Wilson’s.
