Kinetic Visual Field Testing

The Orthoptists at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital are responsible for performing kinetic visual field testing

What is a visual field test?

A visual field test measures the area of vision you have when looking straight ahead. It gathers information about your central and peripheral vision. It is a painless test and does not involve eye drops.

What is the purpose of assessment?

The test determines whether or not you have a normal visual field. The test checks for any gaps or changes in the normal visual field (visual field defect). A visual field defect is when a part of the field is missing or not as sensitive as it should be.

A visual field test can also be used to monitor any changes to an existing visual field defect.

How is a kinetic visual field performed?

Before the test is done an Orthoptist will check your level of vision (acuity) and if you wear glasses we will check how strong they are so we can choose a suitable lens to use during the test.

An Octopus machine is used to perform the test. You will be asked to look into a large white curved screen (bowl).Your head is kept still; you have to rest your chin on a chin rest and you keep your eyes looking straight ahead. A light is moved from the edge of the screen into your visual area, whenever you see it you will be asked to press a button to let us know you have seen it. The extent of the visual area (visual field) is tested using lights of different sizes and levels of brightness.

How long will it take?

Usually each eye is tested separately and you should allow up to 40 minutes completing the whole test.

How do I get the results?

The Orthoptist performing the test maybe able to explain the findings of your results. You will also be advised if you do not meet the DVLA visual field criteria for driving.

Sometimes the results will need to be reviewed by the referring doctor and they will notify you if any further tests are needed.

Where do I come for my appointment?

The clinic is held in the Annie Boardman Diagnostic Suite in the Ophthalmology Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

The Ophthalmology department is located on A Floor of the Outpatients building opposite the hospital's multi-storey car park.
