Pulmonary Vasculature Imaging

The PH team and the CVBRU have developed close research links with Jim Wild, Professor of Magnetic Resonance Physics at the University of Sheffield.

Professor Wild is an internationally renowned expert in the development of novel MRI techniques to image the airways and pulmonary perfusion/oxygen uptake.

These methodologies are making a real clinical impact in the diagnosis of pulmonary disease previously impossible using other modalities.

The CVBRU has funded a 12 month entry-level clinical fellowship, taken up by Dr Andrew Swift. His research, which started in August 2010, will focus on the functional MRI for non-invasive measurement of pulmonary artery pressure and mechanisms of disease.

MR parameters will be developed to differentiate between pre and post-capillary disease, both for disease classification and patient follow-up. These will then be compared with other routine clinical measures.
