World Class Research

Opened in 2009, the Sheffield Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit (CVBRU) is one of only a handful of such centres in the country.

Combining both research and clinical staff the unit aims to translate cutting edge research into new clinical procedures and understanding, thus improving the treatment of patients with Cardiovascular Disease and Pulmonary Hypertension in Sheffield and across South Yorkshire.

The CVBRU has been established as a partnership between the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Sheffield thanks to a multi-million pound grant from the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).

The team are focused to support the Government’s “Best Research for Best Health” strategy by establishing the NHS as an internationally recognised centre of research excellence through supporting outstanding individuals, working in world-class facilities, conducting leading-edge research focused on the needs of patients and the public.

The CVBRU has dedicated clinical research rooms in the new Clinical Research Facility at the Northern General Hospital including a Clinical Investigation Room, an Echocardiology room as well as an Exercise Treadmill room.

The Research Nursing team has so far recruited over 250 patients either with Acute Coronary Syndromes or Pulmonary Hypertension disease onto the studies being conducted at the unit.

The CVBRU is situated on the ground floor of the Centre for Biomedical Research on the Northern General site. It shares its home with the Bone Biomedical Research Unit on the ground floor and the Clinical Research Facility on the second floor.
