Research Technicians
Nickie Jokonya
Nickie obtained her degree in Biomedical Sciences from Sheffield Hallam University in 2001, where she worked as a lab technician for 7 years in Analytical Chemistry, Centre for Science Education, and Biomedical Sciences. This stimulated an interest in tissue culture and, after graduating, she took up a research technician post at the University of Sheffield with Prof Freddie Hamdy's group, investigating benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. In 2009 Nickie joined Professor Eastell in the Bone BRU as a research technician in the bone biochemistry laboratory. Nickie also holds Association of Accounting Technicians and SAGE Line50 qualifications, and worked part-time for 6 months with Vina Khan and team in the Financial Planning section of the University of Sheffield in 2007.

Julie Porter
Julie worked as a Technical Assistant for Yorkshire Envionmental before transferring to their water testing laboratories. She then joined the Bone BRU, working in the Bone Biochemistry Laboratory. Julie's main role is to perform analyses on serum and urine samples for clinical studies, using a range of auto analysers and manual assays. She also maintains the analysers to ensure they are fit for purpose. Additionally, she helps students with their projects, and takes responsibilty for day to day tasks required in the up-keep of a busy research laboratory.

Philip Nicklin
Philip is a student of Biomedical Sciences (BSc Hons) at Sheffield Hallam University, and is currently spending a work placement year sample handling within the Bone BRU laboratory and Biorepository. He also works within the Bone Biochemistry Laboratory, gaining an insight into the workings of a busy research laboratory.
