Katharine Knight - Biomedical Research Unit for Musculoskeletal Disease Manager

Katharine obtained an applied Biochemistry degree from the University of Liverpool in 1995, where she completed an integral 12 month industrial placement with the Bone Disorders Team at AstraZeneca. This stimulated an interest in osteoporosis research and in 1999 she completed a PhD with Dr Scutt at the University of Sheffield investigating the relationship of male hormones and osteoporosis in men. This was followed by a post doctoral position with Prof Skerry at the University of York investigating the role of glutamate receptor signalling in the osteoblastic signalling pathway. In 2002 Katharine joined Professor Eastell in Sheffield as a research administrator for the clinical research team at the Northern General Hospital where she was responsible for the research governance and financial management of the unit. During this post, she also undertook a secondment to the Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Research Department. In 2008 she was appointed as the NIHR Biomedical Research Unit for Musculoskeletal Disease Manager and is currently responsible for the staffing, facilities and operational business of the unit.
