The Biomedical Research Unit for Musculoskeletal Disease combines staff from the University of Sheffield with those from the Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (STH NHS FT). We have achieved a fully integrated research team, with the Centre for Biomedical Research providing a base at the Northern General Hospital for our support staff and investigators.

Our laboratory-based activities and associated investigators are housed within the Mellanby Centre at the University of Sheffield Medical School. The Unit currently funds research staff from both the university and the STH NHS FT, or else provides access to clinical and support staffing resources, and research facilities, to aid researchers during all stages of their projects.

Our research programmes are headed by the investigators, who oversee all studies relating to their programme area(s).

The researchers, a term which includes investigators, research associates, clinical fellows, PhD students and BMedSci students, are supported by the successful framework that we have established.

Our support staff are involved from study inception to publication, and provide the clinical support (e.g. nurses and technicians) required for our patient and volunteer research visits, as well as bringing research and editorial support to the unit. All staff enjoy support from one of two secretarial staff.
