Welcome to the NIHR Biomedical Research Unit for Musculoskeletal Disease

Established in 2008, the NIHR Biomedical Research Unit for Musculoskeletal Disease was set up to carry out research in to new treatments for musculoskeletal conditions and diseases. We want to translate advances in medical research into clinical practice for patient benefit and work in areas such as osteoporosis and joint arthroplasty.

This research unit is a collaboration between Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Sheffield, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) as part of the Government's Best Research for Best Health strategy.

We work out of the new Centre for Biomedical Research alongside the Biomedical Research Unit for Cardiovascular Disease. This Centre was completed in part thanks to a generous donation from the Women's Royal Voluntary Services.

We continue in Sheffield's long tradition of excellence in bone research , combining the expertise of our research investigators with the dedication of our research nurses and support staff to bring relevant and key advances to the field.

Headed by the internationally respected Professor Richard Eastell, the Bone BRU maintains strong ties with the University of Sheffield’s Academic Unit of Bone Metabolism, and forms part of the Mellanby Centre.
