Patient Feedback Scheme

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has commissioned the Picker Institute to provide continual feedback on the experiences of our patients over the next three years.

The Picker Institute’s Frequent Feedback service uses hand-held digital devices to collect systematic ‘on the spot’ reports from patients within the hospital.

The Frequent Feedback system has the flexibility to collect and analyse data on the essential aspects of patient experience and ‘locally tailored’ questions, where clinical staff or managers want to check how they are doing at ward level or with the progress of specific improvement initiatives.

The system will provide many benefits to our patients, the main advantages of implementing continuous real time monitoring include:

  • Patients and visitors are able to comment on the spot regarding their experiences.
  • The number of patients having the opportunity to provide feedback is hugely increased compared to current systems.
  • Continuous, timely management information is available at Board and ward/department level, enabling ongoing improvement of services and early detection of problems.
  • Ability to monitor and track the effect of action planning.
  • Enables resources and attention to be focussed where they are needed.

The system is used by volunteers. This use of a ‘neutral’ party helps to reduce the risk of a response bias, which can occur when the people who are delivering care are seeking responses from those dependent on their care.
