The Sheffield Microsystems Coaching Academy (MCA) is the first dedicated Coaching Academy in the NHS to train staff in service improvement techniques. The Microsystem Coaching Academy aims to:- build improvement capability into the workforce to maximise quality and value to patients through rethinking and redesigning services. Coaches are trained in the art of team coaching and the science of quality improvement to work with front line teams to help them re-design the services they deliver. The Academy initially coached staff within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the Children’s Hospital but now also offers its coaching services to the wider health economy in Sheffield and beyond. Achievements so far include pre-operative assessments that have reduced patient visits and saved nurse hours, a change in the way elderly people are assessed which enables them to return home faster and an improvement in the management of Acute Kidney Injury across the Trust, among many others.
