Sheffield Hospitals triple finalist in top health awards

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals has been named as a triple finalist in the prestigious Health Service Journal awards.

The Trust’s catering team, staff engagement team and an innovative online pre-operative assessment were singled out from thousands of entries across the country in the top healthcare award scheme.

The Health Service Journal Awards are considered to be among the most influential in the healthcare sector.

The Trust’s catering department are one of eight NHS organisations in contention for the Improving Environmental and Social Sustainability title after improving patient satisfaction scores through the promotion of healthy eating and the use of fresh prepared, sustainably sourced food and ingredients in the meals it serves whilst also taking positive steps to manage energy, water and waste.

The team, who serve around 40,000 meals a week to staff and patients, are the first large NHS Trust in the country to achieve the new Soil Association Green Kitchen Standard and Food for Life Silver award for both inpatient and staff dining areas.

Innovation in the Trust’s approach to employee engagement has also been recognised through the staff engagement’s team shortlisting in the Staff Engagement Award category.
As well as responding to a wide variety of issues raised by staff in the annual staff survey including improving staff wellbeing, the team have launched an electronic recognition scheme and actively encouraged staff to try out their ideas to make a change for the better through ‘Give it a Go Weeks’ and regular ‘Listening into Action’ events taking place to involve staff in service improvements.

The Electronic Personal Assessment Questionnaire has been named as a finalist in the Using Technology to Improve Efficiency’ category.

The questionnaire, which was developed by clinicians at the Trust, allows patients to complete their preoperative assessment on the same day as their outpatient appointment with the surgeon. This enables them to avoid a return visit to hospital and frees up appointment slots for those who need to see a specialist nurse practitioner assessment prior to elective surgery. Before the online system was introduced, patients could wait several weeks before having a preoperative assessment.

Sir Andrew Cash, Chief Executive for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is honoured to have been shortlisted for these prestigious awards. This is excellent recognition of the passion and commitment of our teams, and the difference their work makes to both our staff and our patients.”

The Health Service Journal received over 1,600 entries from NHS organisations for the awards.

The winners will be announced at a special award ceremony in London on the 22 November.
