Neurophysiology becomes third Trust department to receive IQIPS badge of quality

• Sheffield now has the most accredited physiological services departments in the country

The neurophysiology team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals has become the third department in the Trust to be awarded Improving Quality in Physiological Services Programme (IQIPS) accreditation.

The award from the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) means Sheffield has more departments accredited than any other Trust in the country. Neurophysiology is the second, and largest, department of its type nationwide to receive the accreditation, with the other accredited departments in the Trust being Audiology and GI Physiology.

The IQIPS programme is professionally led with the aim of improving service quality, care and safety for patients undergoing physiological diagnostics and treatment. It is recognised by the Care Quality Commission and the process of self-assessment, improvement and accreditation offers the opportunity to share best practice and enhance efficiency, and provides a nationally recognised badge of quality.

It assesses safety, environment, patient experience and clinical standards.

Consultant Neurophysiologist Dr Ros Kandler said: “The feedback we have received is fantastic, saying we have set a really high bar. We were very proud and happy to receive the accreditation, and the warmth of the feedback was exceptionally pleasing.”

The department, which investigates and diagnoses neurological disorders such as epilepsy and motor neurone disease, was praised for being friendly, welcoming, professional and knowledgeable, with patients positive about the service they received.

Service Manager Charlotte Waite said: “It has taken us from being a good department to an excellent department. It is a badge of quality that means we are performing at a high level.”

The Royal College of Physicians said that having three accredited departments showed Sheffield had an “invaluable commitment to patient care.”
