Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in double leadership award nomination

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is in line for two top awards at the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Leadership Awards.

Dr Gillian Hood, a consultant anaesthetist inspiring hundreds of trainees to take up a long-term career in the field, and Gareth Cornell, a clinical specialist physiotherapist in Critical Care championing new and innovative practice supporting the recovery and rehabilitation of patients following critical illness, have been shortlisted from hundreds of entries from across the region for the highly sought after leadership awards.

The Awards, which are run by Health Education England, recognise the ‘extra mile’ professionals working at all levels of the NHS have on improving people’s health and staff morale.

Dr Gillian Hood, who has worked at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for 25 years, is one of three finalists in the ‘Inclusive Leader’ category. She has been recognised for the exceptional support she has given to hundreds of trainees considering a career in anaesthesia – a skill that is used in all aspects of patient care, including in complex surgery of prematurely born babies and critically ill patients. Not only has Gill provided years of examination preparation practice and guidance in her spare time, but she has offered emotional and psychological support to trainees during what can be an extremely stressful process. She has been lauded for being ‘an ambassador for unheard voices’, and has helped support a high proportion of medical anaesthetic trainees from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities.

Gareth Cornell, who is based on General Critical Care at the Northern General Hospital, is in contention for the ‘Leading and Developing People’ category for developing the clinical skills and capability of the rehabilitation team within Critical Care, helping many patients with complex disability following critical illness regain physical function. He encourages and supports staff to consider new ways of working to improve patient care, and works with the team to develop education, standards of service delivery, and a positive culture towards change and improvement. This is alongside national work he undertakes with a number of professional committees.

Gareth said: “I am extremely humbled by this award nomination and am extremely grateful every day to be part of such a committed therapy team and Critical Care multi-disciplinary team.”

The winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony on Thursday 8 December at the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria, Sheffield. If successful at the Regional Awards finals, Gillian and Gareth will go head to head with winners from across the country in their individual category in the National Recognition Awards Ceremony in 2017.
