New helipad officially opened by HRH The Duke of York
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s £2 million new helipad was officially opened today (20th September 2016) at the Northern General Hospital by HRH The Duke of York KG.
The state-of-the-art helipad, which gives critically ill patients quicker access to life-saving medical treatment, opened in June after an amazing fundraising appeal by Sheffield Hospitals Charity which raised over £1.95million.
Since it opened four months ago, the helipad has already provided lifesaving treatment to 45 patients from across South Yorkshire who were brought into the Major Trauma centre at the Northern General Hospital. The Major Trauma Centre is one of only 26 specialist centres in the country and treats around 1200 patients each year, 500 of which have life-threatening injuries.
Dr Stuart Reid, Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Clinical Lead for Major Trauma at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals said: ‘The new helipad provides an industry leading facility for air ambulances to land easily and for our teams to transfer patients straight into the Emergency Department where we can start to treat them straight away. These
precious minutes saved give us the best possible chance to save the life of the patient.’
