Sheffield to host new Excellence Centre for NHS staff training


Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is to host a new excellence centre for South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw which will provide top quality training for healthcare support staff.

The South Yorkshire Regional Excellence Centre will be part of the National Skills Academy for Health network, and one of only nine in the country. It will focus on vocational training for both clinical and non-clinical staff who support the delivery of healthcare.

Excellence Centres act as regional hubs to develop strong collaborations between education, training and healthcare providers, enabling training expertise and best practice to be shared.

The Chief Executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sir Andrew Cash, said: “The Excellence Centre is a fabulous opportunity to support workforce development across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

“Collaboration between education, health and social care providers means affordable, quality assured training that responds to local workforce needs, establishing common standards for performance and enhancing patient experience.”

The centre aims to:

  • Share learning and best practice
  • Work collaboratively on workforce development and skill mix
  • Standardise and quality assure training
  • Highlight training opportunities for different needs and budgets
  • Ensure ease of access to training, including e-learning and distance learning
  •  Reduce gaps in training between organisations and prevent duplication of training


Linda Crofts, the Head of Learning and Development at STH, said: “We are very pleased to be leading on the Excellence Centre, which will provide our staff and others across the region with the opportunity to update and learn new skills, share their knowledge and experience with colleagues and support the delivery of the best possible healthcare to patients.”

The director of the National Skills Academy for Health, Candace Miller, said: “The South Yorkshire Region Excellence Centre has a very strong, clear and strategic vision for how it will operate, building on existing strengths and bringing partners together to share skills and resources and deliver better access to learning for staff.

“As the latest addition to the Excellence Centre network, the South Yorkshire Excellence Centre is sure to play a pivotal role in the region and I am delighted to welcome them to the National Skills Academy for Health.”
