Sheffield physiotherapist honoured by British Elbow and Shoulder Society

Sheffield physiotherapist will look at how surgery and physiotherapy helps restore function in ‘unforgiving joint’

A leading physiotherapist specialising in rehabilitation of the shoulder and elbow has been awarded a prestigious Fellowship from the British Elbow and Shoulder Society.

Val Jones, an upper limb specialist physiotherapist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, was one of only two members of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society to receive the esteemed Copeland Fellowship.

The Fellowship is offered to one allied health professional member and one consultant member.

The honour was bestowed to Val at the British Elbow and Shoulder Society’s 2016 annual conference. Chris Peach, Consultant Elbow and Shoulder Surgeon, University Hospital of South Manchester, received the consultant Fellowship.

Together with British Elbow and Shoulder Society President Mike Thomas, the pair will spend two weeks in South Africa, observing clinical practice and seeing how surgeons operate on trauma and elective surgery across the private and public healthcare systems. They will look at how surgery and physiotherapy helps restore function in the upper limb in both groups of patients and formulate ideas for future research.

Commenting on the honour, Valerie Jones said: “I am extremely privileged to have been given this unique opportunity to develop extensive contacts and experience in South Africa.

“Functionally the shoulder and elbow can be very unforgiving joints after injury, so you need optimal treatment including physiotherapy to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients. Here in Sheffield I’ve been fortunate to work with a great team of surgeons for over 15 years. Through this Fellowship I will be able to share our expertise in South Africa and bring back new knowledge and experience which could shape care for patients in Sheffield too.”
