Sheffield shoppers are being called upon to support Breast Cancer Awareness month

October is Breast cancer Awareness month and South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw NHS Breast Screening Programme is teaming with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in a bid to encourage Sheffield women to take up their routine mammogram appointments.

On Wednesday, 21 October the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Breast Screening Team will be at Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre to speak to women about the importance of breast screening and what can be expected when they attend their mammograms. They will also be there to answer any questions and signpost women to their nearest breast screening unit.

Breast screening is vitally important as earlier detection offers a better chance of successful treatment and full recovery.

Joanne Lay, Superintendent Radiographer at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals said: “Breast screening allows us to detect whether you have breast cancer before you would even notice any signs or symptoms. Therefore I urge all women of Sheffield to join the fight against breast cancer and take up their breast screening invitations.”

Breast screening is offered to all women aged 50 to 70 with some women beginning to be called up from 47 years. If you are aged 50 or over and have not had a mammogram in the past three years, please contact the Sheffield breast screening unit on 0114 271 1920 to book an appointment.

If you are over the age of 70, and haven’t been screened within the last three years you can self-refer. Just call the unit on 0114 271 1920 to make an appointment.
