Patients praise care in our hospitals in national survey

A national survey by the Care Quality Commission has shown Sheffield Teaching Hospitals continues to provide high quality care and a good patient experience.

Over 98% of the 407 inpatients surveyed in 2013 said the wards were clean.

The care and treatment received in the A&E Department at the Northern General Hospital, was highlighted as better than the national average, as was patient information and the amount of emotional support patients received from staff.

73% of the patients treated at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Weston Park Hospital, Jessop Wing and Northern General Hospital rated their experience as 8 out of 10 or better (up from 67% in 2012) and 32% rated their experience as 10 out of 10.

Mr David Wilson, 62 from Sharrowvale was one patient who was pleased with his care. He was treated on Firth 2 after suffering a blood clot. He said: "The care was absolutely
fantastic, the staff were very attentive and the food was great. I stayed there for a month and I had some problems sleeping at first but the Sister made sure that I was comfortable and I can’t praise her and the other staff enough."

Other highlights from the recently published report included: 94% of patients always had enough privacy when being examined or treated, 86% always had confidence and trust in Doctors and 95% of toilets and bathrooms were rated as being either very/fairly clean.

As well as the positive feedback, the survey also highlighted some areas where patients would like to see further improvements, including patients using the same bathroom or
shower area as patients of the opposite sex. This referred to private bathrooms with specialist equipment that is used by both sexes but at different times.

Andrew Cash, Chief Executive at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said:

“Our staff work extremely hard on a daily basis to deliver the best possible care and the survey results are testament to this dedication. As the 2013/14 year comes to a close, I would like to thank staff for all their hard work in continuing to provide a safe and secure experience for the patients who use our services. Throughout the year we have seen demand increasing and in particular for emergency care so I am delighted to see how well we have performed, both in terms of standards and patient feedback.

However we are never complacent and will be exploring where we can make further improvements based on the survey responses.”
