Sir Andrew Cash has been honoured by the Health Service Journal for his outstanding leadership and achievements as Chief Executive at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
 Andrew, who has been Chief Executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation since its inception in July 2004, was recognised in the prestigious ‘Chief Executive of the Year’ category in the Health Service Journal Awards.
The Awards are one of the most coveted in the healthcare industry.
Andrew’s collective leadership style has fostered successful collaborative working throughout the Trust and across the wider NHS and social care system, and he is always ‘one step ahead’ in setting, articulating and supporting people to achieve a vision that reflects the ever-changing landscape of health and social care.
He successfully led the organisation through one of the biggest mergers of an NHS acute Trust, bringing together Sheffield’s five adult acute hospitals to create Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The organisation then became one of the first wave NHS Foundation Trusts.
In 2011 he guided the successful integration of community health services with the City’s adult acute services in 2011 – resulting in the Trust becoming one of the largest integrated health providers in the NHS.
Under his leadership, the Trust has won the ‘Trust of the Year’ title in the Good Hospital Guide three times and was one of only 18 out of 174 NHS Trusts to be rated ‘Good’ in all of the Care Quality Commission’s fundamental standards - Caring, Safe, Effective, Responsive and Leadership.
He has been a catalyst for many successful collaborations, including the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Sustainability and Transformation Plan and Accountable Care System, and has personally led a drive to improve workforce race equality standards.
Andrew has a values-driven approach, and personally encourages staff at all levels to try new ideas which make things better for patients, colleagues and the wider NHS. This has resulted in over 5,000 staff being actively involved in ‘My idea makes a difference ‘ projects.

His loyalty, not just to the Trust and its staff, but also to the city of Sheffield and the NHS, is apparent in all that he does. He has an exceptional ability to bring people together to achieve positive change for patients and he has made a major contribution to health policy, system reform and healthcare delivery at national, regional and local level. This recognition is richly deserved.”
The Trust’s catering team, staff engagement work and an innovative online pre-operative assessment system were also named as finalists in the awards which were announced at a special award ceremony in London on 22 November.
