Spinal Surgery Service
The neurosurgery department contributes to the adult spinal services at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Syringomyelia and intradural spinal tumours are exclusively managed within neurosurgery. Functional spinal surgery, such as insertion of spinal cord dorsal column stimulators, is done with the support of the Pain Clinic.
Acute spinal injuries on head injured patients are managed in-house. Neurosurgery also provides for general spine (e.g., lumbar microdiscectomies) and complex spine surgery (involving spinal constructs and including occipitocervical fusions).
Referrals are through Choose & Book or addressed to individual consultants involved with the spine service.
