Department of Neuroanaesthesia

Neurosurgical Theatres

Total Intravenous Anaesthesia is universally used providing ideal operative conditions for surgery with minimal post-operative nausea and discomfort for the patient. Bispectral Index monitors (BIS) are used to assess adequacy and depth of anaesthesia.

Anaesthesia for Neuroradiology

This includes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT scans, angiography and coiling of intracranial aneurysms.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery

Lasting a whole day and involving transfer between two hospital campuses, most young children and some adults need specialised anaesthesia to undertake this procedure.

Research and Teaching

The department actively encourages and supports training in the principles of Neuroanaesthesia and intensive care of anaesthetic trainees, other medical staff, operating department practitioners, nurses, and physiotherapists.

Neuro-intensive care

The consultant neuroanaesthetic staff are key members leading the multi-disciplinary team managing six neuro-intensive care beds (with a further two beds planned) in the Neuro-intensive care distinct from the general intensive care.

Our Team

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust currently employ 10 consultant neuroanaesthetists.
