Three Years of Hiccups cured by STH brain surgeon

A man who suffered with hiccups for three years was cured by brain surgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals which also saved his life.

Christopher Sands, 26, had a tumour which pressed on part of the brain stem. It was benign but, without surgery, Christopher could have died within two years.

He said: "It would have eventually spread to pushing on to the nerves that control movement on my left, then on to my eyesight and speech. Then I probably would have died."

Christopher had the operation in September 2009.

He said: "Within a week I was out of hospital and I could just about walk. I didn't have any of the other problems.

"I don't regret having the operation at all. I could not have left the tumour there anyway - it's also a huge relief not to hiccup any more."
