Free membership

Over 7,000 local people have already become members of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Membership is open to anyone who has been a patient with our hospital or who lives locally. All you need to do is register with us.

As a member you will receive:

  • Our free quarterly member's newsletter ‘GoodHealth’. It's full of health tips and advice direct from our doctors and nurses as well as valuable information on the hospitals and what’s going on in the NHS
  • Invites to exclusive member's events. These might range from health fairs where you can come and get your blood pressure checked or our open evenings where you get to listen to some of our medical experts
  • A chance to have your say by taking part in surveys about the hospital or letting the Hospital Governors who represent members know your views

The opportunity to vote in elections for the Hospital Governors – and even stand for election yourself if you want.

Will it take up much time?

Membership is free, and how engaged you are as a member is entirely up to you. You might want simply to receive an occasional newsletter, or receive more regular information about the work of our hospitals or about health issues affecting you or your family. Or you might want to play a more active role, participating in focus groups or surveys, becoming a volunteer, or standing as a governor on the Members’ Council. Being a member will not affect your treatment at any of our hospitals.

Who can be a member?

To be eligible to be a member you must either live in the Sheffield City Council area (you will be registered as a public member of the Trust), or have been patient at one of our hospitals - the Northern General, Royal Hallamshire, Jessop Wing, Weston Park and Charles Clifford - now or since April 1998 (you will be registered as a patient member of the Trust). Staff at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals automatically become staff members.

Additional Information

What's it like being a member?

Teenager Rebecca Reeves, from Richmond, is a volunteer at the Spinal Injuries Unit at the Northern General Hospital.

She said: “Being a Trust member is very useful; I get to know about the ins and outs of the hospital’s projects and feel well informed about what’s going on in the NHS – I can then feed this information back to my family.”
