Coronary Heart Disease and Interventional Cardiology

The Sheffield Cardiothoracic Unit provides a full range of diagnostic and treatment services for all aspects and presentations of coronary heart disease.

We have a Rapid Access outpatient service for GP referrals for stable patients with recent onset of chest pain. Patients are guaranteed an appointment within 2 weeks of referral.

There is a 24/7 service for emergencies, including a Primary Angioplasty service for ST elevation heart attack patients, serving Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and Bassetlaw.

We have the full range of diagnostic facilities for coronary heart disease including treadmill exercise testing, (stress) echocardiography, myocardial perfusion scintigraphy and angiography. We also have ready access to multi-slice CT angiography and magnetic resonance angiography.

We have a suite of 5 state of the art Catheter Labs with facilities for balloon angioplasty, stent implantation, pressure wire assessment, intravascular ultrasound, distal protection and rotablation.

We also have five dedicated Cardiothoracic Operating Theatres, a 12 bedded Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and an 8 bedded Cardiac Surgery High Dependency Unit. We provide these services for the city of Sheffield, South Yorkshire/North Trent including North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire.
