Heart valve clinic offers patients specialist care at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals run a clinic which gives extra support to patients who have undergone heart valve surgery.

The Valve clinic at Northern General Hospital is a  nurse led service which offers patients specific help from a team which specialises in the area.

In this clinic patients undergo a full history and physical examination by the specialist nurses who are running the clinic.

Patients also undergo an echocardiogram which is a detailed examination of the new valve that has been implanted or one that has been repaired.

The new clinic means any early problems with the valve will be detected quicker and therefore any necessary treatment is undertaken before complications set in.

Irene Nash, 76, underwent a heart valve replacement in August. She said she was very impressed with the new service the clinic provides.

She said: “It is very reassuring to have this personal and dedicated clinic to go to and they were very good at explaining everything to do with my care.

“You are not sure what to expect when you undergo something like heart surgery but the support I have received, especially from the staff at the clinic, has been fantastic.”
